Bogus Virus Phone Calls Scam

ACTechUK.comSomething that has been going on for quite some time now…. the phone rings and you are informed that unfortunately there is a problem with your computer. This “problem” has been miraculously detected from some far flung corner of the world and only the cold caller has the solution! Er yeah right…. Quite often the caller will say they are representing Microsoft to make them sound more official.

The next step is to get you to turn on you computer (did they not know it was turned off???) and then check something called the event viewer. To the uninitiated the contents of the event viewer can look rather daunting and confusing, which is where the caller comes to your aide…. Clearly you have a virus…. Er yeah right once more…

Bogus bogus bogus… Pure scam to get you to allow someone to access your computer remotely, install their own malware or extract credit card details to pay for their “help”.

The bottom line is, if you get one of these calls, end the call.

If you have been unfortunate enough to have been caught out by these charlatans please give me a call, drop me an email or post below and we can remove any nasty things they may have left behind.

This article from The Guardian way back in July 2010 shows how long this has been going on…
